New Idria - A Rich Cultural Resource

The historic features consist of the Idria town site, eight mining tunnels, sections of the aerial tramways, building sites, a large water reservoir, several miles of historic trails, and many mining relics.

  • New Idria Town Site – The Idria town site consists of about 70 building sites of various conditions that range from dilapidated to inhabitable.
  • Mining Tunnels – Some of these tunnels, such as the powder magazine, the Bell Tunnel and the Sulphur Spring Mine were opened over one-hundred years ago. Other tunnels include the Ranchito Mine and the Dead Horse Mine.
  • Aerial Tramway – Aerial tramways were built around 1915. Although idle since 1942, several of the trellises and cable riggings remain along an accessible hiking route. A two-mile aerial tramway began operating in 1915, marking the first time since that workers roasted ore from the San Carlos Mine in the Idria furnaces. The tramway had many buckets and traveled an elevation of 2,130 feet between terminals.
  • Reservoir – The Idria water reservoir was built over one-hundred years ago and is still being used today. The reservoir is located near the summit of the hill directly south of the Idria town site.
  • Mining Relics – Many old mining relics are dispersed around the property. Some of these relics include stone masonry construction that dates back to the 1860s.
  • Historic Trails – Most of the old mining trails are too narrow, weathered and over grown to be used by vehicles.
