The New Idria Time Line

1859, June – The first record of an attempted murder at New Idria. From a letter dated June 1, 1859: "The day after you left we had a row at Julian's whisky shop in which Alvarado was stabbed in the back under the shoulder blade the knife penetrating the lungs. Mr. Thrall, who carries this, having some skill in surgery has waited over him two days. The man that struck him (Rojas) has either escaped or is hid away in the mountains, Filipe, Manual, Bernardo and two or three more of the Chileanos have been hunting him but have not yet returned. Have offered $50 reward for his capture."

Another letter, dated June 11, 1859: "Touching on the man Rojas, I shall write to Sheriff Murphy to hold him until he can send word to the officers of Fresno County to take him to Millerton, I think we should use our utmost energies to have him so punished as to set an example to others who may think we are out of the reach of the law. Alvarado is now walking about – he has the constitution of a jackass."

1859, January 13 – First record of a birth at New Idria occurred in January 1859 when Cirilo Acconches is born (probably Conches or Conchez). Excerpt from a letter written January 14, 1859: "A boy child is born to the mine yesterday morning, Cirilo Acconches. Manuel the ox driver nurse. The maestro acting as mother or day nurse to the other children and Joaquin man of all work."
